Editor’s Note: I inserted this command into ChatGPT: “write an article describing the following data collected by the Brown Opinion Project about the percentage of Brown students who have used ChatGPT to assist with a class assignment:

61.48% of students responded: ‘No, but I know what ChatGPT is’

31.23% of students responded: ‘Yes’

6.44% of students responded: ‘No, and I don't know what ChatGPT is’

48% of physical sciences concentrators, 33% of life science concentrators, 27% of arts and humanities concentrators, 25% of social science concentrators responded: ‘Yes’

42% of men and 22% of women responded: ‘Yes’”

The Brown Opinion Project recently conducted a survey to explore the usage of ChatGPT by students at Brown University. ChatGPT is a conversational AI model developed by OpenAI that can understand and respond to natural language queries.

The survey was conducted among a representative sample of Brown students, and the results provide interesting insights into the usage of ChatGPT by students for their academic assignments.

According to the survey, 61.48% of the students responded that they were aware of ChatGPT but had not used it for their assignments. This indicates that a majority of the students are aware of the existence of ChatGPT, and may be interested in exploring it in the future.

31.23% of students responded that they have used ChatGPT for their academic assignments. This suggests that ChatGPT is gaining popularity among students as a tool to assist with their coursework.

Interestingly, 6.44% of students responded that they were not aware of ChatGPT. This indicates that there is still some work to be done in terms of raising awareness about ChatGPT among the student population.

When the usage of ChatGPT was analyzed by academic concentration, the survey found that physical sciences concentrators had the highest usage rate, with 48% of them having used ChatGPT for their assignments. This was followed by life science concentrators at 33%, arts and humanities concentrators at 27%, and social science concentrators at 25%. This indicates that ChatGPT is being used across different academic disciplines.

The survey also found a gender difference in ChatGPT usage, with 42% of men having used ChatGPT for their assignments, compared to 22% of women. This suggests that there may be differences in how students approach technology-based tools for academic assistance.

Overall, the survey results suggest that ChatGPT is a tool that is gaining popularity among Brown students for their academic assignments. However, there is still a need to raise awareness about ChatGPT among the student population and to explore the potential impact of this tool on academic performance.

Note: All quoted poll-takers remain anonymous to maintain the integrity of Brown Opinion Project surveys. Brown Opinion Project conducted its March 2023 poll on March 1st, March 2nd, and March 6th, collecting 700 total responses from Brown undergraduate students. The margin of error is 3.84% with 95% confidence.
